Rushes €3 Million In Aid To Asian Tidal Wave Victims
Brussels, 26 December, 2004
ECHO, the European Commission's
Humanitarian Aid Department acted swiftly today in the wake of the
Indian Ocean triggered tidal wave crisis which has left thousands dead
and displaced a million people. €3 million in
primary assistance funds has been released. Further substantial aid is
expected to follow
rapidly once the scale of need has been appraised.
Commission President Barroso
spoke of his; "shock and great sadness" on learning learned of the
catastrophe which he noted "has tragically claimed so many lives"
expressed his sincere condolences, deepest sympathy and solidarity with
the families of the victims in the affected countries: Indonesia, Sri
Lanka, India, Thailand, Malaysia, Maldives, Bangladesh and Burma.
Speaking of the importance of
speedy relief to the victims in the vital hours and days immediately
after the disaster, Louis Michel, the Belgian incoming
European Commissioner responsible...
