Calling for all major countries to act, the 12 euro-land finance ministers are putting pressure on the US to tackle the excessive volatility of the dollar stating; "All major countries and economic areas must play their part more actively in reducing global imbalances by putting in place the appropriate economic policies." 

EU finance ministers want the US to take action to rein in its widening current account shortfall. But economists agree that the dollar won't climb out of its current position of weakness for the foreseeable future. The two reasons usually given to support this view are trade and budget deficits in America. The great western superpower has run a trade deficit with the rest of the world for many years and through it government-spending deficits have been masked by issuing debt.
