POLITICS, THE EURO AND INNOVATION

The final goal of monetary union is now clearly in sight, and the message beamed across the world by Europe’s Finance Ministers echoes loud and clear: "all remaining barriers to the single market will be eliminated to ensure future EU global economic development." It is not that anyone doubts such determination yet, while historic decisions to finalise the EURO were recently being taken, another 15 Ministers in Council, this time for Science, rode roughshod over at least two of the fundamental issues at stake; economic development and the future. They agreed to cut precious research and development funds due between 1998 and 2002 from a proposed £10.6 billion to £9 billion leaving a beleaguered scientific community to face the consequences.
